3 Awesome Tips For Buying Outdoor Blinds

By allknowing

When shopping for some new outdoor blinds you will have to look through many different models and designs. This article is designed to introduce you to these options and way up the pros and cons so you can choose the right model for you.

1. Choose the material

The first thing to take into account is what material your outdoor blind will be made out of. The cheapest options are fabric or vinyl outdoor blinds. These are usually waterproof and can be easily self mounted. A more interesting option for your entertainment area are bamboo outdoor blinds. These come in a variety of hatchings to allow a lot of light or barely any light through.

For use of your outdoor area during bad weather, clear PVC outdoor blinds provide nearly complete shelter from wind and rain while also allowing light to stream into your patio or porch. They also do not block the view of your backyard allowing you to still enjoy your outdoor garden décor. During the summer they are equally as great with most models coming with UV ray protection. Wood is another option when it comes to material, but while looking great wood tends to wear the worst from the outdoor elements.

2. Take accurate measurements

It’s important when buying a new set of outdoor blinds to gain accurate measurements. Being too short could prevent your windows from fully covering your window or space between patio posts. Being too long can cause the blinds not too fit or interfere with each other. Preset blinds are pretty cheap, if you can fit them I recommend it to save money. If you cannot get preset blinds to fit, custom outdoor blinds can be purchased to suit your needs.

How to measure your patio for blinds

Outdoor patio blinds tend to sit inside the arch they are covering. This looks very tidy and also provides a gap for some air to escape. This is important when using PVC outdoor blinds as there is no way for air to flow through the blinds. Lack of air circulation can make the patio stuffy and can cause the blinds to fog up, losing their see through ability. For the hieght measure from the inside of the top mounting face to the floor.

How to measure for verandah or outdoor window blinds

Firstly measure the width of the of the window recess, then decide how far you want the outdoor blind to extend over the edge. I recommend about 2 inches each side. Do the same for the verandah except measure between 2 supporting beams. If you wish to sit the blind inside the gap, follow the patio blinds instructions.

3. Choose your type

Do not confuse roller with roll up outdoor blinds. Roller blinds contain the roll at the top and are opened and shut by either a tension loaded spring or by a looped cord that can be pulled to rotate the roll. Roll up blinds create the roll at the bottom of the blind and are either retracted by a cord or rolled up by hand. You can get these in a variety of materials: clear PVC, bamboo, mesh or fabric.

Another option if you want a more deluxe feature on your outdoor roller blinds is to look at a powered option. Motorized outdoor blinds can be remote controlled so you can adjust the light streaming in from your chair or from inside the house.

The above are great as window or outdoor patio blinds; if you’re looking for just outdoor window blinds then you have a few more options. Outdoor venetian blinds provide a traditional looking shutter to the outside of the window. These can be installed via shutters that attach to the outside of your windows providing a very 1950s house look.
